Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) is being used widely in Ireland today. It’s most popular application is in carparks where it is used to record vehicles entering and exiting. ANPR has reduced the ‘lost ticket excuse’ when drivers are trying to avoid parking charges. Automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR; see also other names below) is a technology that uses optical character recognition on images to read vehicle registration plates to create vehicle location data. It can use existing closed-circuit television, road-rule enforcement cameras, or cameras specifically designed for the task. What about ANPR cameras on road networks? Figures reveal that England and Wales are covered by a network of more than 9,000 ANPR cameras. Expect this figure to be far greater today as the risk of terrorism and organised crime increases. ANPR provides lines of enquiry and evidence in the investigation of crime and is used by LEA throughout England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. How it works As a vehicle passes an ANPR camera, its registration number is read and instantly checked against database records of vehicles of interest.
